Today was the first annual Raw Learning Student Retreat and it was inspiring! Our full-time students joined Founder, Gleamer, Lead Teacher, Ashley, and Lead Facilitator, Jen, for a full day of team building exercises.
These students are at Raw Learning everyday, including field trips on Wednesdays and we wanted to help them become an inclusive and positive presence for the rest of the children and families that attend Raw Learning as homeschoolers or drop-ins.
We focused on how to combat bullying with inclusion and kindness and how to handle disappoint and failure with statements like, "I could, if..." instead of saying, "I can't.."
We built lunch together with homemade pizzas, crossed a hot chocolate river, and created a paper chain of kindness that will be in the halls throughout the school year for other children to add to.
Raw Learning truly focuses on the whole child. You hear this term a lot in education circles, but what it really means is that the emotions and feelings of the child are not ignored or pushed aside for academic gain. Today was a true example of that philosophy. Some of our kids had a hard time in the retreat, it wasn't all sunshine and roses! They were being pushed to interact with children they normally wouldn't, and had to go outside their own boundaries of comfort. However, we worked through those emotions with each child and ended the day as not a perfect team, but the start of a great team! Here's to an inspiring fall!
