FAQs

Can my child attend your school? Raw Learning is a self-directed learning community. At this time we are not operating as a private school and do not offer drop off services. A parent/guardian must be on site with their child(ren) at all times. We welcome everyone and anyone with an interest in self-directed learning. Many of our community members are homeschooling/unschooling families.

What can I do at Raw Learning? Anything you want! As a self-directed learning community, you choose your own path. Our facility includes a kitchen, small library, toddler toys, tumbling mats, dress up clothes, science equipment, lots of arts & crafts materials, and more. Spending a significant part of the day in nature is central to our mission, and we are fortunate to have access to extensive forest trails, a community garden, and a swimming pond. We will sometimes offer classes, based on the interests and requests of our community members.

What is the cost to attend? We do not charge tuition or membership fees. The cost to run Raw Learning averages around $600 per month, and we ask each family to donate what they are able to afford toward our operating expenses.

Who runs Raw Learning? Raw Learning is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization overseen by a volunteer Board of Directors. The Board also serve as community facilitators, and at least one Board member will be at Raw Learning during open hours.

What are your hours? We are currently in a period of transition as we prepare a new facility. Once up and running we will be open two days a week. In the meantime, we are hosting field trips throughout the region and meet ups at Board member’s homes, as well as at nature areas in Rockbridge County. If you’d like more details on these meet ups, please contact us! Everyone is welcome.

Where are you located? Our facility is in southwest Rockbridge County, Virginia. More details will be shared as we approach the opening of our new facility!

Do you still have a location in Staunton, VA? After many years of operation in Staunton, we have moved to Rockbridge County, Virginia. We no longer operate a facility in Staunton, but sometimes host field trips in the Staunton/Harrisonburg area.
